Team History

Ohio State first played football in 1890, and 22 years later the Buckeyes were admitted as a member of the conference. It wasn’t until 1942 that the Buckeyes experienced national notoriety, with their first national title coming under legendary Paul Brown. However in 1951 the Buckeyes hired Woody Hayes, and this would spark an incredible run of success that continues to this day. The Buckeyes boast 35 Big Ten Championships and 8 national titles.

Ohio Stadium replaced Ohio Field in 1922. Its capacity has grown from an initial 66,210 to today’s 104,944. The Buckeye faithful has been treated to 81 Consensus All Americans and 7 winners of the Heisman Trophy, which is tied with Notre Dame for the most in history. Les Horvath, Leon Hart, Vic Janowicz, Howard Cassidy, Archie Griffin (2), Eddie George and Troy Smith have earned the award.
