Badger fans can celebrate the longest-played rivalry in major college football with the two trophies that have been at the center of most of the annual battles with the Gophers: The Slab of Bacon and Paul Bunyan’s Axe. And they can now add the trophy that signifies the most evenly played Big Ten annual rivalry grudge match: the annual showdown with the Iowa Hawkeyes.
As diehard Badgers know, the Slab of Bacon was the winner to the battle between 1930 and 1943, the year of its disappearance. The BACON represented that the victor had “brought home the bacon.” It wasn’t until 1994 that this legendary trophy was found in a storage facility at Camp Randall Stadium, and by then it had been replaced by Paul Bunyan’s Axe. The Axe entered the fray in 1948, and it is awarded to the victor to this day.
Our Slab of Bacon replica has the exact same dimensions as the trophy currently on display at the University of Wisconsin. And while our axe is much smaller than the 6 feel long version that’s traded back and forth, it does make a more fitting decoration for an office or basement.
The Heartland Trophy may only have come into existence in 1994, however the Wisconsin-Iowa rivalry dates all the way back to 1894, and entering the 2018 campaign the Badgers lead the series by a razor-thin margin: 46-43-2.
The Badger Diehard Pack is the perfect gift for the Wisconsin fan who loves to celebrate the two Badger football rivalries.
